Zuzu African Acrobats

Bell Cultural Events Series
Bell Center – MaBee Hall
Friday, Feb 7, 2020 at 7:00 PM (CT)

The Zuzu Acrobats represent an authentic slice of contemporary African culture that reaches back into the deep cultural past. If you were to take a vacation to Mombasa to any hotel along the coast where ki-Swahili is preserved in its purest form you would see a group like the Zuzu Acrobats performing in a theater or stage. The show is based on 2000 years of history the techniques having been passed down by an oral tradition that is similar to literary opuses like the Utendi wa Tambuka. The show lasts 60 minutes including a cultural discussion on the importance of orality in the Bantu culture and how the cultural legacy of these people has been faithfully preserved down through the generations through living voice (viva voce). The performance part includes limbo, contortion, chair balancing, comedy dance and much more set to catchy beats. It really is one of the few cultural experiences that is enjoyable for all audiences.
